DOWN SYNDROME

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. There is no cure however treatments include self-care, therapists, and devices.

I was born with Down Syndrome. I grew up going to therapy. I had speech, occupational, and physical therapy. They all helped me to have an amazing life as well as a supportive family and friends.

I am a self-advocate for Down Syndrome. I have lobbied in Washington DC and often speak to my senators and congressmen. I want to speak for other people who can't speak for themselves.

I like to stay healthy and know that exercise is a good thing for you. it can help your mind and body. You feel so good when you work out, it's an amazing feeling to have. Working out can help you feel good about yourself and live a happier and healthier life.

I stay active in man ways. I have been swimming competitively and dancing my whole life. I cross train in the Ozark Mountains and have recently taken up standup paddle-boarding. I have built good friendships and teamwork skills, as well as self confidence. I love being with my family and friends and have fun in my life.

I have Down Syndrome but I am much more than just that. I am a person just like you. I am like everyone else, an extra chromosome just makes me a little bit different than other people.
